Heptane is another example of hydrocarbons which can also be applied to fuel octane rating once it is mixed with varying amounts of iso-octyne.

Today, additions of lead and other replacements, increase the engine’s power prior to detonation. This means that the addition of lead will improve the performance of the engine. One other crucial element of improved engine power is the fuels air ratio.

Contrary to what is believed by many, converting to the use of fuel with high octane ratings alone without changing anything else is not the only requirement of improving an engine’s power. High octane rated fuels are essential in high compression engines due to fact that they help to delay the probability of knocking or detonation at high power settings.

Another classification of AV gas is the 100LL, which has at least a 0.5 gr lead per liter of fuel and is considered a low lead fuel version. We also have the AV gas 82UL, which is unleaded and is mostly used in the low compression ratio engines.

In previous times, AV gas had a number of grades in use but today they have been reduced to only the AV 100.

While adding lead to aviation fuel might be good in enhancing the performance of an engine during combustion, unleaded fuels are recommended for reasons relating to health. However, lead pollution is mostly caused by the millions of cars that use lead fuel.
